Sensor Notes

The sensor motes use state of the art hardware to achieve robustness, efficiency and longevity. The motes communicate with the gateway wirelessly and hence the whole design is least intrusive on the targeted structure. The low power transceivers use a mesh networking protocol to communicate with the local gateway. The motes have a sensor bus that can be used by a third party application to suit their needs. With massive power saving algorithms and ultra-low power hardware, the sensor motes will have a battery life of at least 10 years with commercially available 3V coin batteries and a 15 mA sensor drain.

IP-Gateway

The gateway is the main control unit of all the sensors in the network in a particular area. It can be used to control the action of the sensor nodes. In addition to being the control unit, it also acts as the interface between the wireless mesh networked protocol and the internet. The gateway updates the data in the database and provides real time sensor information. Its configured to work with our sensor mote end points, hence, it is essentially a plug and play device. The sensor information could be brought to the user in multiple platforms including web, software and mobile apps.

Cloud Servers

Cloud servers are a genuine win-win, the vendor passes on reduced overhead through better resource allocation and more densely populated data centers while the consumer enjoys flexible bandwidth and space. Data from our sensor network is sent wirelessly and stored in the database in a cloud server. The cloud service makes our data safe and secure. The data stored in the cloud is then used for generating reports and analytics.

Cloud Based Platform

The sensors update the cloud servers in real time with which the software is in constant communication. The cloud based platform provides numerous statistics which will help city administrators and parking lot operators to make informed and intelligent decisions. Its robust UI is simple yet useful. The UIs enable not only easy understanding of the current status of the sensors but also make sense of the numerous different statistics generated to make relevant decisions. All the decisions made are based on real time and historical data. The generated statistics help in auditing. The charges can be changed dynamically. They also help in understanding traffic and usage, section wise so that decisions regarding entry and exit points can be taken in real time.

Cloud Based Mobile App

The cloud based app is for commuters. The app gives a robust UI for both on-street parking lots and indoor parking lots. Its UI is light on information, contains sensor maps on the floor plan of the parking lots. It can help the commuters navigate to free empty parking spots. The latency in change of status appearing on the app when there is good network connectivity is less than 3 seconds. Hence the data on the app is immediate and real time. The app can be used for reserving parking spaces, remembering where you have parked, automating payment etc.

For on-street parking space, the UI is integrated with Google Maps. Parking information can be viewed on a more granular scale with the help of a second stage mapping of the sensors on that particular street. The same features that are used for indoor parking lots are applicable here.

The problems of green house gas emission, ever depleting fuel resources and global warning have to be tackled through careful measures taken through our everyday activities. These menacing problems of society that has a far reaching impact on our lives, have to be dealt with one tiny step at a time and with perseverance. If driving on city roads through traffic to get to a destination is a hazardous venture, then finding parking is an even bigger one. It is estimated through studies conducted in the US over a period of almost 80 years, that about 30% of traffic on road is caused by commuters looking for free parking space. Which means 30% of vehicular pollution, fuel consumption and gases emitted contributing to global warming, are caused by commuters looking for free parking space. Paid and restricted but well managed parking can reduce car use/ dependency which can reduce air pollution and congestion in the city.

Air pollution is already taking heavy toll due to respiratory diseases like asthma, cardiac problems. Long term exposure to high air pollution levels can lead to increased occurrence of cancers. Noise level lead to stress and disease. Global experience shows that when parking policy is designed as a travel demand management it reduces car usage and therefore congestion, air emissions as well as fuel use. Boston froze the parking requirements in the city at a level that is only 10 per cent higher than the parking requirement level that existed in 1973. This helped Boston to control car usage and meet the federal clean air standards. In New York very high parking fees and limited parking supply have lowered car ownership far below the average rates in other US cities and reduced air pollution. Portland, Oregon has set an overall cap of parking spaces downtown. This has increased public transport usage from 20-25 per cent in the 1970s to 48 per cent in mid 1990s.
